Time

Three equal parts inside one beat

The number 3 changes a division, not the speed of the pulse.

Change the subdivision locally

In 4/4, a quarter-note beat usually splits into two eighths. An eighth-note triplet puts three evenly spaced notes into that same beat: three in the time normally occupied by two eighths.

In ordinary 6/8, three eighths already belong naturally to the dotted-quarter beat. They are not automatically triplets. A tuplet changes the normal division for its context.

The three spaces together take one quarter-note beat. Do not leave a gap after the third note.

Tap the same 80 BPM pulse through both. First say two syllables per beat, then three.

Three eighth-note triplets in 4/4 occupy how much time?

Common mix-up

Three notes are not enough to prove a triplet

Every group of three notes is a triplet.

A triplet is a three-in-the-time-of-two division. Three ordinary eighths in 6/8 are the normal division, not a tuplet.
